The workplace can be a stressful environment, and ongoing stress can cause worry and anxiety. While we all experience anxiety at times, it can affect our long-term well-being and may also lead to sickness and absence if it is not handled well.
Anxiety can also prevent us achieving our full potential, which may have a negative impact on both workplace performance as well as our social activities and relationships.
Top tips to enhance your mental wellbeing
If you are feeling anxious at work, it may help to consider the following tips:
- Try to be more flexible in your thinking. Reduce stress levels by asking how much a situation really matters. Accept that you may feel sadness and anger at times and that you should express these emotions from time to time. Keep expectations realistic and try to avoid developing rigid opinions of people and situations.
- Be more assertive. Being assertive is not about being stroppy or rude; it’s about expressing how you feel and what you want, honestly and appropriately, without becoming aggressive or demanding. Hiding how you feel can cause negative feelings and emotions to build up inside you.
- Deal with problems in a timely fashion. Feeling unsure or overwhelmed can lead to procrastination. In the short term, this provides relief from whatever is making you anxious, but it can make the situation worse. The longer a problem is left the more difficult it is likely to become. Break problems down and deal with them bit by bit, or ask for help and advice in dealing with it.
- Take time out to think about your life. Take time out to think about where your life is headed and how you are managing it. What is most important to you and is the way you are leading your life supporting this or working against it? Identify changes you would like to make, however small, to get things back on track. Make changes by focusing on the small, achievable changes that will eventually add up.
