How to manage your activity to cope with work pressure

While a certain amount of pressure can have a positive impact on performance, it can lead to stress if it isn’t managed effectively. Stress occurs when we become unable to cope with pressure, and it can have an impact on our physical and mental health. It can also deplete our energy levels, making it difficult to perform well at work and enjoy social activities.

Here are three ways to improve energy levels and keep stress at bay:

  1. Exercise. Working on two levels – physical and psychological – exercise is a great stress buster. Firstly, it gets rid of adrenaline that is produced when we get stressed, which can make us feel wired when we’re under pressure. Secondly, exercise enhances mood by causing the brain to release endorphins. Take a brisk 15-minute walk at lunchtime and after work to unwind.
  2. Sleep. Quality sleep is the only way we can properly recharge our batteries. It’s impossible to deal with high-pressure situations well when we’re running on half-empty. It’s important that we plan sleep routines carefully to make sure we are getting the right amount of sleep every day. Keep to a regular routine by going to sleep and getting up at roughly the same time each day (within 30 minutes), and get into the habit of relaxing and winding down before switching off the light. Switch off smartphones, tablets and laptops by 9pm as the blue light they emit prevents melatonin (sleep hormones) being produced.
  3. ‘Me time’. Create time when you slow down a bit and think about how you’re going to deal with the challenges you’re facing. People who exercise regularly quote ‘me time’ as one of the top benefits of following a regular exercise programme.
